AI Coding Tools Statistics 2026

This page collects figures on AI coding assistants and agents: how many developers use them and how often, how much developers trust their output, how much code is now written with AI, how fast GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code have grown, what controlled studies and surveys say about productivity, and what tests show about the quality and security of AI-generated code. It draws on the Stack Overflow Developer Survey (2025 and 2026), JetBrains' State of Developer Ecosystem 2025, Google's DORA 2025 report, GitHub's Octoverse, METR's randomized studies, earnings calls and announcements from Microsoft, Google, Cursor and Anthropic, a Science study by the Complexity Science Hub, and research from Sonar, Atlassian, Veracode and Gartner. Figures are global unless a country is named and mostly describe 2025 and 2026.

Quick answer

AI coding tools are now standard: 84% of developers use or plan to use them (Stack Overflow, 2025), 73% use coding assistants or agents daily (Stack Overflow, 2026) and DORA puts adoption at 90%, yet 46% distrust the accuracy of AI output against 33% who trust it. Google says 75% of its new code is AI-generated, GitHub Copilot reached 50 million users (Microsoft, 2026) and Cursor passed $1 billion in annualized revenue. Measured productivity is less clear: METR's randomized trial found experienced developers took 19% longer with AI in early 2025.

What the figures show

Adoption is close to universal among working developers. Stack Overflow's 2025 survey counts 84% of respondents using or planning to use AI tools, JetBrains finds 85% using AI regularly and DORA reports 90% of software professionals using it. Use has also become daily: 73% of Stack Overflow's 2026 respondents use coding assistants and agents every day, and coding is now the single most common reason they use AI at all. Gartner expects 90% of enterprise software engineers to use AI code assistants by 2028, a level the surveys suggest has already been reached among active developers.

Trust lags use. In 2025, 46% of Stack Overflow respondents distrusted the accuracy of AI output and 33% trusted it; DORA finds 30% trusting AI only a little or not at all. Sonar's 2026 survey frames the result most sharply: 96% of developers do not fully trust AI code to be functionally correct, but only 48% always check it before committing. The most common frustration in Stack Overflow's survey, cited by 66%, is output that is almost right but not quite.

The share of code written with AI is rising fast but depends on how it is counted. Google reports 75% of its new code is AI-generated and engineer-approved, up from 50% in fall 2025, while developers in Sonar's survey put their own figure at 42%. The Science study by the Complexity Science Hub, which classifies public Python code on GitHub, finds 29% AI-assisted code in the U.S. in early 2025, with lower shares in Germany, France, India and China. Vendor growth follows: GitHub Copilot went from 26 million to 50 million users between October 2025 and July 2026, Cursor doubled from $500 million to $1 billion in annualized revenue during 2025, and Claude Code's run-rate revenue passed $2.5 billion in February 2026.

Productivity evidence splits between what developers report and what controlled studies measure. Over 80% of DORA respondents and 68% of Atlassian respondents report large time savings, and METR's 2026 survey finds a median self-reported 3x speed change. METR's randomized trial found the opposite in early 2025, with tasks taking 19% longer, and its late-2025 rerun was too affected by developers refusing to work without AI to give a reliable answer. The Science study estimates a 3.6% productivity gain across programmers. Security testing adds a caution: Veracode found 45% of AI-generated code samples introduced OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities.

Common questions

What percentage of developers use AI coding tools?
Between 84% and 90% depending on the survey: 84% of Stack Overflow's 2025 respondents use or plan to use AI tools, JetBrains finds 85% using AI regularly, and DORA reports 90% adoption among software professionals in 2025. In Stack Overflow's 2026 survey, 73% use coding assistants and agents daily.
Do developers trust AI-generated code?
Mostly not without checking it. In the 2025 Stack Overflow survey, 46% of developers distrusted the accuracy of AI output and 33% trusted it, and Sonar's 2026 survey finds 96% do not fully trust AI code to be functionally correct. Only 48% of Sonar's respondents always check AI-assisted code before committing.
How much code is written by AI?
Google says 75% of its new code was AI-generated and approved by engineers in April 2026. Developers in Sonar's 2026 survey estimate 42% of their committed code comes from AI, and a Science study estimates 29% of new public Python code in the U.S. was AI-assisted in early 2025.
How many people use GitHub Copilot and Cursor?
Microsoft reported 50 million GitHub Copilot users in July 2026 and over 4.7 million paid subscribers in January 2026. Cursor does not publish a user count, but crossed $1 billion in annualized revenue in November 2025 and says over 70% of the Fortune 500 use it.
Do AI coding tools make developers more productive?
Developers report that they do: over 80% of DORA respondents say AI improved their productivity and 68% of Atlassian respondents save more than 10 hours a week. Controlled evidence is weaker: METR's randomized trial found experienced open-source developers took 19% longer with AI in early 2025, and a Science study estimates a 3.6% productivity gain across programmers.
Is AI-generated code secure?
Not by default. Veracode's 2025 tests found 45% of AI-generated code samples introduced OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities, rising to 72% for Java. 45% of Stack Overflow respondents say debugging AI-generated code is more time-consuming.

How we picked these figures

Survey figures come from Stack Overflow's 2025 and 2026 Developer Surveys (self-selected developers worldwide; question bases vary and are noted where shown), JetBrains' State of Developer Ecosystem 2025 (24,534 developers in 194 countries), Google's DORA 2025 report (nearly 5,000 technology professionals), Sonar's 2026 State of Code survey (over 1,100 developers), Atlassian's 2025 State of Developer Experience research and METR's 2026 survey of technical workers, which METR notes has low response rates and likely selection bias. Controlled evidence comes from METR's randomized trials, which are small (16 developers in the first study) and focused on experienced open-source maintainers, and from the Complexity Science Hub study in Science, which estimates AI use from public Python code on GitHub. User, subscriber and revenue figures are company statements from Microsoft earnings calls, GitHub, Cursor and Anthropic; revenue figures are annualized run rates and user counts include free users. Google's share of AI-generated code is an internal company figure. Veracode's security rates come from lab tests of model output, not code in production. Gartner figures are forecasts. Sonar, Atlassian, Veracode, GitHub, Cursor and Anthropic sell developer or AI products, so their research should be read with that interest in mind. Each figure links to its source and quotes the sentence that contains it. Each quote is copied from the original publisher and fetched again by a script to confirm it still appears there.
