Small Business Software Statistics 2026
This page collects figures on how small businesses buy and use software: how many firms use any digital tools, which accounting, payroll, CRM and cloud applications they run, how quickly AI is arriving, and what they spend and struggle with. Most figures describe the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union in 2025 and 2026, with OECD and Canadian data for comparison. Survey definitions of a small business differ, from under 50 employees in EU statistics to under 500 in US federal data, so each figure states its scope, publisher and year.

What the figures show
Almost every small business now runs on some software, but the depth of use varies widely. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce found 99% of US small businesses used at least one technology platform in 2026, and 41% used six or more. In the UK, the Department for Business and Trade found 74% of SME employers used technology or web-based software to sell or manage the business in 2025, up from 61% two years earlier, with use rising from 72% of micro businesses to 88% of medium-sized ones.
Finance software is the most common category. Among UK SME employers that use business software, 82% ran accountancy software, 64% payroll software and 62% electronic invoicing in 2025. Eurostat found 30.67% of EU enterprises bought finance or accounting applications as a cloud service in 2025, and vendor results point the same way: Intuit reported QuickBooks Online Accounting revenue up 23% in fiscal 2026, and Xero added 110,000 US customers in the year to March 2026.
Customer and planning systems lag behind. Eurostat counted ERP use at 41.08% of small EU enterprises in 2025 and CRM use at 24.69%, against 88.71% and 65.43% of large ones. Paid cloud services reached 49.3% of small EU enterprises, and Statistics Canada found 48% of Canadian businesses used cloud computing in 2023.
AI is the fastest moving category but the estimates depend on who is asked. The Federal Reserve Banks put AI use at 46% of US employer firms in late 2025, and the U.S. Chamber put it at 66% of small businesses in 2026, while the Census Bureau's business survey shows 19.8% of all firms and less than 20% of firms with four or fewer employees. Most adopters are early: only 7% of AI users in the Federal Reserve survey had fully integrated it, and Goldman Sachs found 14% fully integrating AI into core operations. Cost, time and choosing the right tool remain the main brakes, with the OECD finding maintenance costs, including software fees, the top barrier for 40% of surveyed SMEs.

How we picked these figures
We selected figures that describe how small businesses adopt, use and pay for software, preferring government statistical offices (U.S. Census Bureau, SBA Office of Advocacy, Eurostat, Statistics Canada, UK Department for Business and Trade), the Federal Reserve Banks' Small Business Credit Survey and the OECD, then vendor and industry surveys that publish their sample and fieldwork dates. Every figure was checked against the quoted sentence on the source page. Definitions differ: Eurostat covers enterprises with at least 10 employees, the UK survey covers employers with 1 to 249 staff, the U.S. Chamber survey covers firms under 250 employees, and the SBA counts firms under 500 employees, including nonemployers. Vendor surveys (Salesforce, Intuit QuickBooks, Clutch) and the Goldman Sachs program survey use non-random samples and should be read as directional. Company results from Intuit and Xero reflect pricing and acquisitions as well as adoption. Statistics Canada figures are from 2023, the latest published edition. Each quote is copied from the original publisher and fetched again by a script to confirm it still appears there. See the methodology.
