10 Best Law Practice Management Software of 2026

By the TopToolAdvisor research desk · Updated November 6, 2026 · Next review December 21, 2026 · 10 products scored

Our pickClioSolo, small and midsize firms that want the broadest feature set and the option to add intake, legal AI and personal injury tools later.8.8

Our pick in brief

Clio Manage is the safest all-round pick: matters, documents, calendars, time, billing and trust accounting sit on every plan, and AI drafting, a client portal and custom fields arrive from the Core plan up. MyCase is the closest rival and the easiest to roll out, with clear per-user prices and automated workflows, intake forms and texting on its Pro plan. PracticePanther and CosmoLex are the value picks at $49 per user a month billed annually, with CosmoLex the stronger choice when you want full legal accounting inside the same system. Smokeball and LEAP suit firms that live in Microsoft Word and Outlook, Rocket Matter is billing-first, Filevine and CasePeer are built for litigation and personal injury caseloads, and Actionstep targets midsize firms that need configurable workflows.

Quick answer

Clio is the best law practice management software for most solo, small and midsize firms in 2026, from $49 per user a month on its Starter plan; MyCase suits firms that want billing, a client portal and automation in one easy package from $50 per user a month billed annually. The cheapest paid options are Clio Starter, PracticePanther Solo and CosmoLex Launch, all at $49 per user a month, with PracticePanther and CosmoLex billed annually.

This list is for law firms that want one system for matters and contacts, calendars and deadlines, time tracking, billing, trust accounting and documents. We compared documented features and published prices for 10 legal practice management products and scored each on features, ease of use and value. Prices are the cheapest paid plan in US dollars as shown on the vendor's pricing page on the date we checked. Smokeball, Filevine, Actionstep and LEAP only quote prices on request, so their entries are marked as pending and their value scores are more conservative.

    Price

Starter from $49 per user per month; Core, Signature and Elite on request

Quoted from the Clio pricing page on November 6, 2026: STARTING AT $49/USER Starter CLIO MANAGE

Clio ranks first because its entry plan already covers what most firms need day to day, and the higher tiers add depth without forcing a change of system. Starter includes matter and contact management, calendaring with two-way Google and Outlook sync, templated task lists, unlimited document storage, a firm dashboard, the mobile app, time and expense tracking, online payments and trust and operating reconciliation. Core adds custom fields, a secure client portal and AI that drafts bills on a schedule and turns documents into calendar events and tasks. Signature brings kanban matter stages, unlimited custom roles, AI-built reports and multi-currency and split billing, and Elite bundles Clio Grow for intake, online booking and review requests. The weak spots are pricing transparency, since only Starter shows a price, and a short 7-day trial. Firms that want the strongest ecosystem and room to grow will still find it the best fit.

    Strengths

    • +Unlimited document storage and the mobile app on every plan
    • +Legal accounting is built in from the entry plan
    • +Clear upgrade path to Clio Grow intake and Clio Work legal AI

    Drawbacks

    • −Only the Starter price is published; Core and above need a quote
    • −Custom fields are not included on Starter
    • −The 7-day trial is shorter than most rivals

    Price

Basic from $50 per user per month billed annually or $60 monthly; Pro from $100 and Advanced from $130 billed annually

Quoted from the MyCase pricing page on November 6, 2026: MyCase Basic Organize the essentials. Get paid faster. Save $120/year $50 $60 USD/user/month

MyCase is the easiest system here to price and roll out, and its Pro plan packs in more than most mid-tier plans. Basic covers case and contact management, time entry, invoicing, trust accounting, online payments with next-day deposits, customizable reporting, unlimited document storage and a limited client portal. Pro, at $100 per user a month billed annually, adds unlimited e-signature, Word-based document generation, automated workflows, client intake forms and a legal CRM, two-way texting, chat and call logging, premium billing and 8am IQ writing and document assistants, plus more than 70 integrations. Advanced adds an AI case assistant, discovery OCR, advanced document automation, a desktop drive, conflict check tracking, split billing and an open API. The main trade-offs are that full legal accounting costs an extra $39 per user, and Basic leaves out the automation that makes MyCase stand out.

    Strengths

    • +All three plan prices are published in USD
    • +10-day free trial with full access and no credit card
    • +Pro bundles intake, texting, e-signature and workflows that rivals sell separately

    Drawbacks

    • −The client portal on Basic is limited
    • −Full legal accounting is a $39 per user add-on, only for Pro and Advanced
    • −Automated workflows are not on the entry plan

    Price

Solo from $49 per user per month billed annually or $59 monthly; Business Pro with accounting from $114 billed annually

Quoted from the PracticePanther pricing page on November 6, 2026: MONTHLY ANNUALLY (Save $120/user/year) SOLO $59 per user/month $49 per user/month

PracticePanther is the value pick for small firms that want the essentials without a large bill. Every plan includes contact and matter management, billable time and expense tracking, a secure two-way client portal, unlimited data storage and mobile apps, and Solo adds internal chat, real-time notifications, PantherPayments, document templates and task and event workflows for $49 per user a month billed annually. Essential, at $69, adds custom fields, custom security roles, invoice read alerts and multiple bank accounts. Business, at $89, brings native two-way texting, intake forms, unlimited e-signature sends, an attorney revenue report and LEDES billing. Business Pro, at $114, adds PantherAccounting with trust and operating accounting, reconciliation and GL, AR and expense management. The ladder is clear, but firms that bill insurers or want e-signature will need Business, which narrows the price gap with MyCase and Clio.

    Strengths

    • +Client portal and unlimited storage are included on the cheapest plan
    • +Four clearly priced tiers, monthly or annual
    • +Free trial without a credit card

    Drawbacks

    • −Custom fields and custom security roles start on Essential
    • −LEDES billing and e-signature need the Business plan

    Price

Launch from $49 per user per month billed yearly or $59 monthly; Core $99 and Pro $129 billed yearly

Quoted from the CosmoLex pricing page on November 6, 2026: Launch $49 user/mo Try for free Core $99 user/mo

CosmoLex stands out because legal accounting is part of the product rather than an integration. Launch, at $49 per user a month billed yearly, covers time tracking and invoicing, retainers and recurring payments, online card and eCheck payments, trust accounting with automatic transfers and holds, compliance reporting, bank reconciliation, matter management and a client portal. Core, at $99, adds LEDES and split billing, matter budgets, lead capture with logic-based intake forms, document editing and assembly, dashboards and AI document summaries. Pro, at $129, adds a full general ledger with payables, bank feeds, advanced compliance reporting, intake workflow automation, calendar sync with Outlook and Google, and an open REST API. The jump from Launch to Core is steep, and CRM marketing, websites and e-signature cost extra. For firms that want one ledger for trust and operating money, it is the strongest value here.

    Strengths

    • +Trust accounting and reconciliation are on the entry plan
    • +Full general ledger replaces a separate accounting product on Pro
    • +Live onboarding training with guided data migration

    Drawbacks

    • −LEDES and split billing start on Core
    • −Calendar sync and intake automation are reserved for Pro

    Price

Essentials from $59 per user per month paid annually; Pro $95, Premier $115 and Elite $145

Quoted from the Rocket Matter pricing page on November 6, 2026: Essentials $59 user/month (Paid Annually)

Rocket Matter puts billing first, and it shows in the plan sheet. Even Essentials, at $59 per user a month paid annually, includes Rocket Matter Pay, evergreen retainers, digital invoicing, trust accounting with matter-based trust accounts and automatic transfers, batch billing, flat fees, multiple timers, write-offs and paperless prebills. Higher plans add LEDES e-billing, split billing and fee allocation, matter templates and workflows with status automation and dependent task logic, document assembly, a client portal and unlimited dashboards. Elite, at $145, adds built-in business accounting with a legal chart of accounts, reconciliation of operating, trust and credit card accounts, payables and bank feeds. Integrations cover QuickBooks Online, Office 365, Google Calendar, Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, NetDocs and Zapier. Essentials limits storage to 25GB, and the CRM costs extra, so firms that need intake will pay more.

    Strengths

    • +Billing tools are extensive from the entry plan
    • +Free data migration and a free trial with no credit card
    • +Ethical walls and custom role permissions on higher plans

    Drawbacks

    • −Essentials caps document storage at 25GB
    • −Entry price is higher than Clio, PracticePanther and CosmoLex

Smokeball is built for firms whose work happens in Word and Outlook. It sells four plans: Bill covers invoicing, time and expense tracking, online payments, trust accounting and accounting integrations, while Boost adds browser-based client and matter management, tasks and calendars, Microsoft 365 Outlook and Word integration, a client portal, e-signature and eFiling. Grow adds Smokeball's native desktop app with practice area templates and calculators, automated court forms, advanced document automation and email management, and is aimed at firms with three or more staff. Prosper+ adds firm insights, lead management, custom workflows, staff activity and profitability reporting, and includes AutoTime, Intake and Workflows. The catch is cost visibility: Smokeball publishes no prices, and its FAQ says pricing depends on users, plan, contract term and add-ons. We scored value conservatively for that reason.

    Strengths

    • +No limit on the number of firm users or clients
    • +Deep Word and Outlook integration for document-heavy practices
    • +Automatic time capture records work as it happens

    Drawbacks

    • −No published prices; every plan needs a quote

We could not confirm a US price yet. Check the Filevine pricing page.

Filevine is a case management platform that has moved its pitch toward legal AI. Its core covers matter management, lead and client intake, document assembly, e-signature and billing and timekeeping, with timers, time capture from email, LEDES codes and Filevine Payments for invoices. Document management includes unlimited storage, in-place editing, previews, version history, document locking and search across PDFs and images. On top, LOIS adds agent-assisted drafting in Word, natural language questions across your matters, real-time deposition transcription and summaries, a deposition library and MedChron medical timelines. It serves personal injury, mass torts, family, immigration and defense firms, plus prosecutors and public defenders. Every package is custom built and priced through sales, which makes comparison hard, and the depth is more than a small general practice needs. We scored ease of use and value lower for that reason.

    Strengths

    • +Deep litigation tools such as deposition copilot and MedChron
    • +Unlimited document storage with version control
    • +A free trial of LOIS without a credit card

    Drawbacks

    • −No published prices; all packages are custom quoted

Basic from $90 per user per month; Pro $130 and Advanced $160, with no long-term contract

Quoted from the CasePeer pricing page on November 6, 2026: CasePeer Basic tier is $90 per user/month

CasePeer is the specialist here: every screen is built for personal injury work. Basic, at $90 per user a month, includes case and contact management, automated statute alerts, medical treatment and injury tracking, lien and letter of protection tracking, case expenses, settlement negotiations and a settlement calculator, client trust tracking, a client portal, calendaring with sync, time tracking and unlimited document storage. Pro, at $130, adds client intake management, unlimited two-way texting that accepts images, case stage screens, litigation event plans, more than 50 extra reports, over 20 integrations and 8am IQ writing help. Advanced, at $160, adds scheduled texts, data sync for reporting, a multi-office reporting suite, an intake investigator portal, case grades and API access. There is no long-term contract or setup fee. It is not a general practice tool, and e-signature costs extra, but for injury firms it removes a lot of setup.

    Strengths

    • +Personal injury workflows are built in rather than configured
    • +No long-term contract or setup fee
    • +Unlimited cloud storage on every plan

    Drawbacks

    • −Only fits personal injury practices

We could not confirm a US price yet. Check the LEAP pricing page.

LEAP sells one subscription that covers case management, document automation, legal accounting and billing, and it is designed to sit alongside Microsoft 365 so emails, calendar items and documents sync with the tools lawyers already use. Its strongest feature is a library of automated forms and templates that fill in client and matter details, backed by automatic timekeeping that records time spent on matter activities. LEAP AI helps with drafting and research, document storage is unlimited, and a mobile app gives access to matters away from the office. LEAP will move data from Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther, PCLaw, Time Matters, Actionstep, Rocket Matter, Filevine, CosmoLex and Firm Central. The drawbacks are the lack of published prices, a possible one-time implementation fee and separate subscriptions for some third-party integrations, so we scored value conservatively.

    Strengths

    • +One subscription covers practice management and accounting
    • +Data migration from Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther and others
    • +SOC 2 Type 2 certified hosting on AWS, per LEAP

    Drawbacks

Actionstep is aimed at midsize firms that want to shape the system around their processes. The core platform covers matter and case management, client intake and form management, document management and storage, CRM, a client portal, custom business reporting, marketing tools, advanced calendaring, task and process management and workflow automation, with a Microsoft Office connection and single sign-on. Time capture with suggestions and timesheets, billing, trust accounting and client accounting are included. Builder automates documents from matter data with conditional logic and Word integration, Capture embeds branded web forms that map client data to matters, and Trace records billable activity across email and documents using AI. All of this is priced per user plus implementation fees, and the add-ons cost extra. It takes more configuration than Clio or MyCase, which is why it ranks lower for ease of use.

    Strengths

    • +Highly configurable workflows for different practice areas
    • +Time capture, billing and core accounting are included
    • +Single sign-on and enterprise-level security

What to check before you buy

Start with how you bill

Hourly firms need timers, flexible rates, LEDES codes and split billing; flat-fee and contingency firms care more about retainers, settlement tracking and case expenses. PracticePanther keeps LEDES billing for its Business plan, CosmoLex includes LEDES and split billing from Core, and CasePeer is built around personal injury settlements and medical treatment tracking.

Check trust accounting and the ledger

Every product here handles client trust funds, but only some include a full general ledger. CosmoLex runs trust, operating and business accounting in one system, Rocket Matter adds built-in business accounting on its Elite plan, PracticePanther adds PantherAccounting on Business Pro, and MyCase sells accounting as a $39 per user add-on for Pro and Advanced.

Decide where documents live

If your lawyers draft in Word and file email from Outlook, Smokeball, LEAP and Actionstep are built around Microsoft 365. Cloud-first tools such as Clio, MyCase and PracticePanther store unlimited documents in the browser and add templates and document generation on higher plans.

Price the plan you will actually need

Entry plans often leave out workflows, intake forms, e-signature and AI. MyCase puts automated workflows and unlimited e-signature on Pro at $100 per user billed annually, and Clio keeps its AI billing and client portal for Core and above, so compare the tier with the features you rely on rather than the headline price.

Ask about contracts and setup fees

Quote-based vendors usually add implementation fees and set prices by user count and contract term. Actionstep prices per user plus implementation fees, LEAP may charge a one-time implementation fee, and Smokeball confirms migration costs in its quote. Get the full first-year cost in writing.

Common questions

What is law practice management software?

Clio Starter, PracticePanther Solo and CosmoLex Launch all start at $49 per user a month, with PracticePanther and CosmoLex billed annually. MyCase Basic is $50 per user a month billed annually or $60 monthly.

All 10 products on this list handle client trust funds. CosmoLex, Rocket Matter Elite and PracticePanther Business Pro also include a full business ledger, while MyCase sells accounting as a $39 per user add-on on Pro and Advanced.
What is the best software for personal injury law firms?
CasePeer is built only for personal injury firms, with statute alerts, treatment, lien and settlement tracking from $90 per user a month. Filevine also serves high-volume injury and litigation practices, with medical chronology and deposition AI, but it is quoted on request.
Do any of these tools offer a free trial?
Clio offers a 7-day trial and MyCase a 10-day trial, both without a credit card. PracticePanther, Rocket Matter and CosmoLex also offer free trials, and Filevine offers a free trial of its LOIS AI.
