GitBook suits product and developer teams whose knowledge base is public product documentation. Docs can sync with a Git repository, API references are generated and interactive, and published sites get an MCP server and LLM-friendly output so AI coding assistants can read them. Teams collaborate through change requests and content reviews, and users can propose edits through Git Sync. Essential costs $65 per site per month billed annually, plus $12 per user, and adds a custom domain, analytics and user feedback, redirects, reusable content and the AI Assistant Ask feature with $20 of AI credits. Ultimate at $249 per site adds an AI chat sidebar and $100 of credits. Page views are never limited. The pricing model gets expensive when you run several sites with many editors, and GitBook is not built for internal HR or operations wikis or ticket deflection.
