Ecommerce Software Statistics 2026

This page collects figures on the software that runs online and in-store selling: how much retail now happens online, which ecommerce platforms merchants use and how much volume they process, why shoppers abandon carts, and how payments and point of sale systems are changing. Most figures describe the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and the European Union in 2025 and 2026, taken from statistical agencies, central banks, company filings and research institutes. Platform figures come from each company's own reports and use their own definitions, so each figure states its scope, publisher and year.

What the figures show

Ecommerce is still gaining share of retail, but at very different levels by country. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates online sales at $340.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, 16.4% of total retail on an unadjusted basis, with ecommerce growing 12.4% a year against 6.6% for retail overall. The UK ONS puts the online share at 28.8% of retail sales in September 2026, while Statistics Canada measures 7.7% of Canadian retail trade in June 2026. In the EU, Eurostat found 78% of internet users bought something online in 2025, up from 62% a decade earlier.

Platform volume is concentrated among a few vendors. Shopify facilitated $335.5 billion of GMV in the first nine months of 2026, up 32%, and 68% of it ran through Shopify Payments. Commerce.com, formerly BigCommerce, processed $9.0 billion of GMV in its third quarter, while Wix reported transaction revenue of $71.5 million in its second quarter. Among sites whose ecommerce system it can detect, W3Techs counts WooCommerce on 47.3% and Shopify on 32.4%, with Adobe Commerce at 1.6% and BigCommerce at 0.6%.

Checkout remains the weak point of most stores. Baymard Institute averages 50 studies to a documented cart abandonment rate of 70.22%, and among US shoppers who abandon for reasons other than browsing, 40% cite extra costs and 18% a forced account creation. Eurostat's survey of EU online buyers points the same way: 20% reported slower delivery than expected and 12% a website that was hard to use in 2025.

Payments are moving to cards, wallets and installment plans, online and in store. The ECB found online payments rose to 21% of euro area day-to-day payments by number and 36% by value in 2024, and cash fell to 52% of point of sale transactions. The Federal Reserve's diary shows credit cards nearly level with debit as the preferred in-person method in 2025. POS vendors are growing faster than retail: Toast reached about 189,000 locations, and Block's Square GPV grew 14% to $76.4 billion in the third quarter of 2026.

Common questions

What share of retail sales is ecommerce in 2026?
The U.S. Census Bureau puts ecommerce at 16.4% of US retail sales in the second quarter of 2026, or 17.1% seasonally adjusted. The UK ONS reports 28.8% of retail sales made online in September 2026, and Statistics Canada reports 7.7% in June 2026.
Which ecommerce platform has the largest market share?
By number of websites, W3Techs finds WooCommerce on 47.3% and Shopify on 32.4% of the ecommerce systems it detects in November 2026. By sales volume, Shopify is far larger, with $335.5 billion of GMV in the first nine months of 2026 against $9.0 billion for Commerce.com in its third quarter.
What is the average cart abandonment rate?
Baymard Institute calculates an average documented cart abandonment rate of 70.22% across 50 studies. Among US shoppers who abandon for reasons other than browsing, 40% cite extra costs such as shipping, taxes and fees.
How many merchants use Shopify Payments?
Shopify reports payments penetration rather than merchant counts: 68% of its merchants' GMV, or $81.4 billion, ran through Shopify Payments in the third quarter of 2026, up from 65% a year earlier.
Is cash still used at the point of sale?
Yes, but less each year. The ECB found cash used in 52% of euro area point of sale transactions in 2024, down from 59% in 2022, and the Federal Reserve found cash made up around 20% of US in-person transactions in 2025.

How we picked these figures

We selected figures from statistical agencies (U.S. Census Bureau, ONS, Statistics Canada, Eurostat), central banks (European Central Bank, Federal Reserve), research publishers (Baymard Institute, W3Techs, Adobe) and the filings or results releases of listed commerce, payments and POS companies. Each quote was refetched from the source page and checked against the figure. Definitions differ: national ecommerce shares use different retail scopes, company metrics such as GMV and GPV cover only each company's own merchants, W3Techs counts websites rather than sales and updates daily, and Baymard's abandonment rate is an average of studies from different years. ECB figures come from its 2024 study and EU enterprise figures describe 2024 sales, the latest available. Each quote is copied from the original publisher and fetched again by a script to confirm it still appears there. See the methodology.
