SEO Statistics 2026

This page collects figures on search engines and organic traffic: market share by device and region, query and revenue trends from Alphabet and Google, zero-click searches, the effect of AI Overviews on click-through rates, AI assistants as a search and referral channel, and how people look for local businesses. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026, with a few 2024 baselines kept for comparison. Geography is worldwide for market share and mostly the United States for behavior studies. Sources include StatCounter, Alphabet's SEC filing, Google, Pew Research Center, SparkToro, Ahrefs, Semrush, Seer Interactive, Similarweb, OpenAI, Cloudflare, Adobe and BrightLocal.

Quick answer

Google handled 91.05% of search engine referrals worldwide in October 2026 (StatCounter), and Alphabet's search revenue grew 12% to $63.4 billion in the third quarter of 2026. But fewer searches send visitors out: SparkToro found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, and Ahrefs estimates an AI Overview cuts the top result's click-through rate by about 58%. AI assistants are growing fast, with 44% of US adults using ChatGPT (Pew), yet they still send a small share of referral traffic next to Google.

What the figures show

Google's hold on search is close to total by StatCounter's referral measure: 91.05% worldwide, 96.35% on mobile and 85.45% in the United States in October 2026. Bing is the only meaningful rival, and mostly on desktop, where it reached 15.03%. Alphabet's results show the business behind those clicks is still expanding, with Search and other revenue up 12% to $63,350 million in the third quarter of 2026 and query growth at a five year high, which Google credits partly to AI Mode passing one billion monthly users.

Growth in searches has not meant growth in clicks to websites. SparkToro's clickstream research found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026, against 60.45% in 2024 and about 45% a decade ago, although the 2026 and 2024 figures come from different panels. Pew's browsing study found people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared and 15% when it did not, and clicked a link inside the summary in only 1% of visits.

Studies built on different data reach a similar conclusion about AI Overviews. Ahrefs estimates a 58% lower CTR for the top-ranking page as of December 2025, up from 34.5% earlier that year, and Seer Interactive measured organic CTR on affected queries falling 61%. Semrush is the useful counterpoint: AI Overview coverage peaked near 25% of keywords in July 2025 and then fell to 15.69%, and the same keywords did not become more zero-click once an Overview appeared. Seer also found that brands cited in the Overview kept noticeably more clicks.

AI assistants are a fast growing but still small source of visits. Pew found 44% of US adults use ChatGPT, OpenAI reports more than 900 million weekly users, and Similarweb counts 9.5 billion monthly visits to generative AI sites. StatCounter, though, shows ChatGPT at 0.09% of combined Google and ChatGPT referrals, and Cloudflare finds AI crawlers fetch thousands of pages per visitor they send back. The visits that do arrive convert well: Adobe saw AI traffic to US retailers convert 90% better than other traffic in September 2026. In local search, BrightLocal found 45% of consumers now ask AI tools for business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier.

Common questions

What percentage of searches are zero-click in 2026?
SparkToro found that 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. The 2026 figure uses Similarweb clickstream data and the 2024 figure used Datos, so part of the change may come from the switch in panels.
How much do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
Ahrefs estimates that an AI Overview lowers the top result's click-through rate by about 58% as of December 2025, and Seer Interactive measured a 61% fall in organic CTR on affected queries. Semrush found the zero-click rate did not rise for the same keywords once an Overview appeared, so the effect varies by query type.
What is Google's search engine market share?
StatCounter puts Google at 91.05% of search engine referrals worldwide in October 2026, 96.35% on mobile and 85.45% in the United States. Bing is second with 4.8% worldwide and 15.03% on desktop.
How many people use AI chatbots instead of Google?
Pew found 44% of US adults used ChatGPT in early 2026 and about four in ten use chatbots to search for information. Most still use Google too: StatCounter measures ChatGPT at 0.09% of combined Google and ChatGPT referrals in October 2026.
Does traffic from AI assistants convert better than organic search?
Adobe found AI traffic to US retail sites converted 90% better than non-AI traffic in September 2026, and Semrush estimated an AI search visitor is worth 4.4 times a traditional organic visitor. Both figures describe small volumes compared with Google traffic.
How are people searching for local businesses in 2026?
BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 45% of consumers used ChatGPT or similar tools for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. Google remains the top review source at 71%, down from 83%, while Apple Maps rose to 27%.

How we picked these figures

We chose figures that describe search market share, query and revenue trends, click behavior, AI Overviews, AI assistants and local search, and we read each quote on the publisher's own page or SEC filing. StatCounter measures referrals from search engines to sites running its tracker, not query counts, and its monthly figures change as new data arrives. Alphabet and Google figures are company statements. Zero-click and CTR figures come from clickstream panels (SparkToro using Similarweb and earlier Datos data, Pew's opt-in browsing panel) or from Search Console and client data (Ahrefs, Seer Interactive, Semrush), so they differ in sample, device coverage and definitions; most exclude searches made in Google's mobile app. AI traffic figures from Similarweb, Adobe and Cloudflare reflect each company's own panel or network. BrightLocal's local figures come from a single consumer survey. We could not include Ofcom's Online Nation report because its pages could not be retrieved for checking, and Datos's State of Search reports are gated. Each quote is copied from the original publisher and fetched again by a script to confirm it still appears there. See the methodology.
