What the figures show

Social media is now the largest single channel in US digital advertising. The IAB and PwC count put 2025 social ad revenue at $117.7 billion, up 32.6%, just ahead of search at $114.2 billion, in a market of $294.6 billion. Third quarter 2026 filings show the growth has carried on: Meta's revenue rose 26% to $64.60 billion, Snap's rose 14%, Pinterest's 12%, and Reddit's advertising revenue rose 54%. At Meta, the average price per ad grew 14% while impressions grew 10%, so more of the gain came from price than volume.

Audiences are large but measured differently by each company. Meta reports 3.64 billion daily active people across its apps, Snap 495 million daily users, and Pinterest 661 million monthly users. Pew Research Center's 2026 survey puts YouTube use at 84% of US adults and Facebook at 70%, with Instagram at 51% and TikTok at 37%. Reach and habit differ: about a quarter of US adults use TikTok daily, as do 61% of teens, and the Reuters Institute finds social and video networks are now the most common route to online news across 48 markets.

Business adoption is broad but uneven. Eurostat found 63.57% of EU enterprises used social media in 2025, with a gap of almost 30 points between large and small firms and a range from 88.2% in Malta to 41.51% in Bulgaria. On the consumer side, Emplifi found 62% of US respondents had bought inside a social app, while DHL's international survey of online shoppers put the share at 45%, against 63% of retailers selling there. Customer service now runs through the same channels, with most consumers expecting a reply within 24 hours.

AI tools are part of daily social media work. Nearly 80% of social media managers in Hootsuite's 2025 survey used AI up to 20 times a day and 83% of marketing leaders were raising AI budgets, though 81% admitted some wasted spend. Eurostat shows marketing and sales is the top purpose for AI among EU firms that use it. Consumers remain cautious: 84% of respondents in Sprout Social's August 2026 survey worry about AI deepfakes.

How we picked these figures

We chose figures on business adoption, platform audiences, ad revenue, consumer usage, social commerce and AI use, and we read every quote on the publisher's own page or SEC filing. Eurostat data cover EU enterprises with 10 or more people and EU residents; Pew Research Center data cover US adults and teens; the IAB and PwC figures cover US ad revenue only; company filings report global numbers using each company's own user definitions, which are not comparable with each other. Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Emplifi and DHL are survey reports from companies that sell to marketers or retailers; they publish sample sizes and dates but are not random samples of the population. Ofcom's Online Nation report was considered but its pages could not be fetched for verification, so it is not cited. Each quote is copied from the original publisher and fetched again by a script to confirm it still appears there. See the methodology.
