9 Best Ecommerce Platforms for Small Business of 2026
By the TopToolAdvisor research desk · Updated November 6, 2026 · Next review December 21, 2026 · 9 products scored
Our pick in brief
Shopify is the strongest first store, with checkout, marketing, in-person sales and international selling in one admin and the widest app ecosystem. Square Online is the best free start for businesses that also sell across a counter. Wix and Squarespace give the most polished design, Ecwid is the cheapest paid plan and slots into an existing site, and BigCommerce packs the most built-in tools into its entry plan. Big Cartel suits small creative shops, WooCommerce suits WordPress users with technical help, and Shift4Shop offers one flat plan for US merchants.
Quick answer
Shopify is the best ecommerce platform for small businesses opening their first online store in 2026; Square Online suits shops that also sell in person and want to start on its $0 plan, and Wix suits owners who want full design control. Ecwid has the cheapest paid plan at $5 a month.
This list is for small merchants launching their first online store: makers, local shops, new product brands and service businesses adding products. We compared documented features and published prices for 9 ecommerce platforms and scored each on features, ease of use and value. Prices are the cheapest paid plan in US dollars as shown on the vendor's pricing page on the date we checked; where the page showed us another currency, the price is marked as pending. Compare three costs for each platform: the monthly plan, card processing, and any extra transaction fee for using an outside payment provider.

Shopify ranks first because it gives a new merchant a complete store from day one and leaves plenty of room to grow. The Basic plan includes a full online store with themes, unlimited products, Shopify's own checkout, abandoned checkout recovery, discount codes, gift cards, email campaigns and 24/7 live chat support. Sidekick, Shopify's AI assistant, can help draft a store from a prompt, and the same admin handles sales on social channels, marketplaces and AI chats. When you start selling at markets or in a shop, a phone or card reader covers in-person payments, and POS Pro is an add-on per location. The trade-offs are cost creep and lock-in to Shopify Payments: using another payment provider adds a 2% transaction fee on Basic, and many stores add paid apps. Live third-party shipping rates only arrive on the Advanced plan. Because the pricing page showed local currency to us, confirm the USD plan price on Shopify's US site before you sign up.
Strengths
- +Basic plan covers unlimited products, 24/7 support and abandoned checkout recovery
- +Largest app ecosystem on this list through the Shopify App Store
- +Built-in sales tax calculation, local currencies and Shopify Markets for later expansion
Drawbacks
- −A 2% third-party transaction fee applies if you do not use Shopify Payments
- −Live third-party shipping rates start on the Advanced plan
- −USD plan prices were not shown to us at check time, so confirm them on the US page

Square Free at $0 a month; Square Plus $49 per location a month; Square Premium $149 per location a month
Quoted from the Square Online pricing page on November 6, 2026:
$0/mo. per location $49/mo. per location $149/mo. per location
Square Online is the easiest low-risk way to open a first store, especially for a business that also sells across a counter or at markets. Square Free costs $0 a month, so you pay only processing fees, and the website builder includes SEO tools, pickup, local delivery and shipping. Because the store runs on the same catalog and inventory as Square's point of sale, stock stays in sync between the website and the till. Shipping labels can be printed in bulk from the Square Dashboard with discounted US rates. Paying $49 per location a month for Plus lowers the online card rate from 3.3% + 30¢ to 2.9% + 30¢ and adds expanded site customization, advanced item settings, QR code ordering and subscriptions. Real-time shipping rates and 24/7 phone support sit on the $149 Premium plan. The design tools are plainer than the website builders above, so it suits sellers who value a working store and unified payments over a custom look.
Strengths
- +A permanent $0 plan where you pay only processing fees
- +One catalog and inventory for the website and the Square POS
- +No hardware needed to take payments, including Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android
Drawbacks
- −Online card payments cost 3.3% + 30¢ on Square Free
- −Real-time shipping rates require the $149 Premium plan
- −Design options are simpler than Shopify, Wix or Squarespace
- Free plan
- Square Free, $0 a month
- Paid plans
- Plus $49 and Premium $149 per location a month
- Online card rate
- 3.3% + 30¢ on Free, 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus

We could not confirm a US price yet. Check the Wix eCommerce pricing page.
Wix eCommerce suits a first-time merchant who cares how the store looks and wants the rest of the business on the same site. Hundreds of free ecommerce templates can be edited without code, and Wix Stores sells physical products with up to 1,000 variants each, digital products, gift cards and subscriptions. Dropshipping and print on demand connect through Modalyst, Spocket, Printful and Printify, so you can open with a catalog you never stock. Wix lists selling on Google, eBay, Etsy, Amazon, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok from its dashboard, plus discounted shipping labels, Avalara automated tax, abandoned cart emails and AI product descriptions. Hosting is included with PCI DSS Level 1 compliance. The design freedom is also the main cost: a fully custom layout takes more time than picking a theme. Real-time shipping rates are documented only for the US and Brazil. The pricing page did not show USD prices to us, so check the current plan that allows online payments on Wix's US site.
Strengths
- +Most design freedom of the website builders on this list
- +Built-in AI image editor and AI product descriptions
- +Free hosting with PCI DSS Level 1 compliance and 24/7 support
Drawbacks
- −USD plan prices were not shown to us at check time
- −Real-time shipping rates are limited to the US and Brazil
- −A highly customized layout takes longer to build than a theme-based store
- Variants
- Up to 1,000 per product

- Product media
- Up to 15 images, GIFs or videos per product

Core from $29 a month billed annually, or $39 a month monthly, up to $30K in annual sales
Quoted from the BigCommerce pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Core New businesses with up to $30K in annual sales. $29 Save 25% per month, billed annually
BigCommerce packs more commerce features into its entry plan than most rivals, which suits a merchant who already knows the store will carry many products and promotions. Core costs $29 a month billed annually or $39 monthly and includes single-page checkout with Apple Pay, Google Pay and Amazon Pay, more than 70 discount options, coupons and gift cards, payments in over 100 currencies, real-time shipping quotes from UPS, USPS and FedEx, a blog, product reviews and the ShipperHQ shipping rules engine. Support is 24/7 by chat and email. Two pricing rules need attention. Each plan has a sales cap, and Core auto-upgrades to the $79 Growth plan once trailing 12-month sales pass $30K. Using a payment provider outside BigCommerce's embedded list adds a 2.0% fee on Core. The admin also has more settings than a website builder, so the first setup takes longer.
Strengths
- +Real-time shipping quotes and multi-currency are on every plan
- +No platform fee when you use an embedded payment provider
- +24/7 chat and email support on Core
Drawbacks
- −Plans auto-upgrade when sales pass the cap, $30K a year on Core
- −Using an open payment provider adds a 2.0% fee on Core
- −More settings to learn than the website builders on this list
- Core plan
- $29 a month annual, $39 monthly
- Core sales cap
- $30K trailing 12-month GMV
- Open payment provider fee

Starter $5 a month for up to 10 products; Venture $35 a month, or $29 a month billed annually
Quoted from the Ecwid pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Starter For beginners $ MX$ £ AU$ ₹ 5 5 5 8 99 450
Ecwid is the most flexible pick for a merchant who already has a website. Instead of replacing it, you can add an Ecwid store to a site built on WordPress, Wix, Squarespace or another platform, and run the same catalog on several sites from one account. If you have no site, the Instant Site builder offers 70+ templates and a free company.site domain. Starter costs $5 a month for up to 10 products with email support, which makes it the cheapest paid plan on this list for testing a small catalog. Venture, at $35 a month or $29 billed annually, raises the limit to 100 products and adds Instagram and Facebook selling, automated tax, discount coupons, a custom checkout and live chat support. Ecwid lists no transaction fees on any plan. The low tiers are tight: abandoned cart recovery, subscriptions, marketplaces and phone support start on the $65 Business plan, so price that tier if you expect to grow.
Strengths
- +Lowest paid plan on this list at $5 a month
- +Ecwid charges no transaction fees on any plan
- +Works inside an existing site instead of replacing it
Drawbacks
- −Starter is limited to 10 products and email support
- −Venture caps the catalog at 100 products
- −Abandoned cart recovery and phone support need the $65 Business plan

We could not confirm a US price yet. Check the Squarespace Commerce pricing page.
Squarespace Commerce is a strong first store for a brand that sells a manageable number of products and wants the site to look finished on launch day. Its templates are designed for specific business types and include built-in AI tools for content. Every plan lets you sell an unlimited number of physical products, services and digital products, and branded invoices are free on all plans. Courses and memberships can sit on the same site. The fee structure matters for a new shop: the Basic plan applies a 2% transaction fee on online store sales and 7% on digital content and memberships, while Core removes the online store fee and cuts the content fee to 5%. Professional shipping and tax services, with label printing, real-time carrier rates and automated tax rates for over 100 countries, appear on the higher plans. A 14 day free trial is available, and annual plans include a free custom domain for the first year. Prices showed in local currency to us, so confirm USD plans on Squarespace's US site.

Free limited Gold plan; Platinum $15 a month after a 7 day trial; Diamond $30 a month
Quoted from the Big Cartel pricing page on November 6, 2026:
7 days free, then $15/mo
Big Cartel is built for artists, makers, bands and other do-it-yourself sellers, and it keeps both the setup and the bill small. Platinum costs $15 a month after a 7 day trial and covers custom domains, physical and digital products, shipping labels with up to 90% off shipping, order tracking, inventory tracking, discounts and print-on-demand apps. Products can be imported from Etsy, Squarespace or Shopify, and the mobile app takes payments in person. Diamond, at $30 a month, adds abandoned cart recovery, scheduled product drops, password-protected products, Zapier connections and priority support. A free, limited Gold plan is also offered. Big Cartel says support comes from people rather than chatbots and that plans have no commitment. The trade-off is depth: there are fewer marketing, catalog and international tools than on the platforms ranked above, so a shop expecting fast growth or a large catalog will likely move on.
Strengths
- +Lowest-effort setup for a small creative shop
- +Free limited plan plus paid plans at $15 and $30 a month
- +Help from people rather than chatbots, with no commitment
Drawbacks
- −Fewer marketing and catalog tools than the platforms above it
- −Abandoned cart recovery needs the $30 Diamond plan
- −Built for small shops rather than large catalogs

- Gold, limited features
- Paid plans
- Platinum $15 and Diamond $30 a month

Free core plugin; Woo estimates hosting at $25 to $350 a month and extensions at $29 to $299 a year each
Quoted from the WooCommerce pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Core platform: WooCommerce Free, with no monthly subscription.
WooCommerce is the most flexible and most hands-on choice here. The core plugin is free and open source, adds a full store to a WordPress site, and places no limit on products, orders or API use. Woo says there is no revenue share and no transaction fee beyond your payment provider's, and it lets you choose and change payment gateways freely. Hundreds of free and paid extensions add subscriptions, bookings, marketplaces, point of sale and marketing tools, and the store is translated into 24 languages. The catch for a first store is that you run the platform. Woo's own pricing page estimates hosting at $25 to $350 a month for most stores and extensions at $29 to $299 a year each, and you are responsible for updates and security. That makes the true monthly cost and the setup effort higher than the hosted builders, unless you already run WordPress or have a developer.
Strengths
- +No platform fee or revenue share
- +Full ownership of the store and its data
- +Widest customization of any option on this list
Drawbacks
- −You arrange and pay for hosting, security and updates
- −Paid extensions add yearly costs
- −Steepest learning curve for a first-time merchant
- Core software
- Free, open source
- Hosting estimate
- $25 to $350 a month for most stores

Unlimited plan for $41 a month
Quoted from the Shift4Shop pricing page on November 6, 2026:
An unlimited, enterprise-grade plan for $41/month.
Shift4Shop takes a different approach from the builders above: one unlimited plan, listed at $41 a month, with most features built into the core software. That includes 100+ free mobile-friendly themes, real-time shipping rates and label printing for USPS, UPS, FedEx and other carriers, coupons and group deals, built-in email marketing, cart abandonment recovery, SEO tools and fraud protection provided by Kount. It connects to Facebook, eBay and Amazon with inventory sync and offers free migration from your current platform, plus a dedicated US-based support team. For a first-time merchant, the weak points are the learning curve and the look of the admin, which is busier than Shopify, Square or Wix. Payments run through Shift4Shop's integrated processing, described on its site as a PayPal solution, so check the processing terms before you commit. It fits US merchants who value a flat price and built-in features over polish.
Strengths
- +Most features are built into the core software rather than apps
- +Free store migration from your current platform
- +Dedicated US-based support team
Drawbacks
- −The admin is busier than the website builders on this list
- −Smaller app and theme ecosystem than Shopify or WooCommerce
- −Payments are tied to its integrated PayPal-powered processing
- Plan
- Unlimited plan, $41 a month
- Free themes
- 100+
- Fraud protection

What to check before you buy
Check transaction fees, not just the plan price
Several platforms add a fee when you use an outside payment provider: 2% on Shopify Basic without Shopify Payments, 2.0% on BigCommerce Core with an open provider, and 2% on Squarespace Basic for online store sales. Ecwid and WooCommerce list no platform transaction fee.
Count your products before you pick a tier
Entry plans can cap the catalog. Ecwid Starter allows 10 products and Venture 100, while Shopify, Squarespace and WooCommerce allow unlimited products. BigCommerce caps sales instead, moving Core to Growth once yearly sales pass $30K.
Plan for selling in person
If you sell at markets or in a shop, keep one inventory. Square Online shares its catalog with Square's point of sale, Shopify takes in-person payments with a phone or card reader, and Big Cartel's mobile app takes payments in person.
Decide how much setup you want to own
Hosted builders such as Shopify, Square Online, Wix and Squarespace handle hosting and security for you. WooCommerce is free software, but Woo estimates hosting at $25 to $350 a month and you handle updates.
Price shipping tools for your products
Real-time carrier rates are on every BigCommerce plan and in Shift4Shop's plan, but need Shopify Advanced or Square Premium. Square, Wix, Squarespace and Big Cartel all document shipping label printing.
Common questions
- What is the best ecommerce platform for a small business?

- What is the cheapest way to start an online store?
- Square Free costs $0 a month and charges only processing fees, 3.3% + 30¢ for online card payments. Ecwid has the cheapest paid plan at $5 a month for up to 10 products, and Big Cartel's Platinum plan costs $15 a month.
- Is WooCommerce really free?

- Which ecommerce platforms charge transaction fees?
- Shopify adds 2% on Basic if you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, BigCommerce adds 2.0% on Core with an open payment provider, and Squarespace charges 2% on Basic for online store sales. Ecwid lists no transaction fees on any plan.
