Accounting Software Statistics 2026

This page collects figures on accounting software: how the largest vendors are growing, how many businesses subscribe to cloud accounting, how far cloud finance software and ERP have spread in Europe, how e-invoicing and digital tax rules are pushing firms onto software, how quickly accountants are adopting AI, and how the accountant workforce is changing. It draws on annual reports and filings from Intuit, Xero, Sage and BILL, official statistics from Eurostat, Ireland's Central Statistics Office, HM Revenue & Customs, the European Commission and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and surveys by Gartner, Wolters Kluwer, the Thomson Reuters Institute and the AICPA that publish their samples. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026; vendor figures are global, adoption figures cover the EU, Ireland and the UK, and workforce figures cover the United States.

What the figures show

The accounting software market is growing on price more than on new customers. Intuit's QuickBooks Online Accounting revenue rose 23% to $5,051 million in fiscal 2026, yet its online ecosystem paying customers grew only 3% and average revenue per customer rose 15%. Xero shows the same pattern: customers rose 11% to 4.92 million in the year to March 2026, while revenue rose 31% and average revenue per customer 23%, partly due to the Melio acquisition. Sage's cloud native revenue grew 23% against 10% for the group, with Sage Intacct now over 45% of its US revenue.

Cloud accounting is now the default business application in the cloud. Eurostat finds 58.16% of EU enterprises that buy cloud services use cloud finance or accounting software in 2025, up 6.52 points since 2023, the fastest gain of any cloud service. ERP suites remain a large company tool: 88.71% of large EU enterprises use one against 41.08% of small ones.

Regulation is the strongest push toward software for small firms. The European Commission's VAT in the Digital Age package requires e-invoicing for cross-border B2B supplies from July 2030 and is expected to cut VAT fraud by up to €11 billion a year. Ireland's statistics office shows only 29% of firms used structured e-invoices in 2023 while 44% still used paper. In the UK, HMRC counted more than 570,000 sign-ups and 436,000 first quarterly updates for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax by August 2026, and Xero credited part of its 14% UK customer growth to the program.

AI and staffing pressures meet in the accounting firm. Wolters Kluwer finds AI adoption among tax and accounting firms jumped from 9% to 41% in a year, and the Thomson Reuters Institute reports organization-wide AI use in professional services at 40% in 2026, while Gartner's finance function measure held at 59%. At the same time, the BLS projects 115,300 accountant and auditor openings a year to 2035 and a 6% fall in bookkeeping clerk jobs, and the AICPA counts 55,152 US accounting graduates in 2023-24, down 6.6%.

How we picked these figures

We used primary sources only: company annual reports, SEC filings and results releases for vendor figures; Eurostat, Ireland's Central Statistics Office, HMRC, the European Commission and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for official data; and surveys from Gartner, Wolters Kluwer, the Thomson Reuters Institute and the AICPA that state their samples. Each figure links to the page we checked and carries the sentence it comes from. Vendor figures use each company's own fiscal year and currency (US dollars for Intuit and BILL, New Zealand dollars for Xero, pounds for Sage) and their own definitions of customers. Survey figures measure different things (finance functions, accounting firms, or professional services organizations) and are not directly comparable. Eurostat covers enterprises with 10 or more employees in the EU. The Irish e-invoicing figures are from 2023, the latest comparable official release we could verify. Each quote is copied from the original publisher and fetched again by a script to confirm it still appears there. See the methodology.
