IT Spending Statistics 2026

This page collects figures on how much organizations and economies spend on information technology: worldwide IT and software forecasts, cloud and security budgets, AI spending, the capital spending of the largest cloud companies, and ICT investment in official national accounts. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026, with forecasts to 2027 and 2029 and UK national accounts data for 2023, the latest year published. Sources are analyst forecasts from Gartner and IDC, SEC filings and earnings releases from Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and NVIDIA, official statistics from the OECD, the UK Office for National Statistics and Eurostat, the International Energy Agency, and Flexera's survey of cloud buyers. Each figure states its scope and year.

Quick answer

Gartner forecasts worldwide IT spending of $6.39 trillion in 2026, up 14.5%, and $7.35 trillion in 2027, with data center systems growing 73.8% and software reaching $1,464 billion. AI is the main driver: Gartner puts 2026 AI spending at $2.7 trillion, and Alphabet ($51.4 billion), Meta ($34.91 billion) and Amazon (about $220 billion planned for 2026) report record capital spending. IDC expects public cloud spending to pass $1 trillion in 2026.

What the figures show

The headline number depends on the definition. Gartner, which counts devices and telecom services, expects worldwide IT spending of $6,391 billion in 2026 and $7.35 trillion in 2027. IDC's narrower ICT measure comes to $4 trillion in 2026, half of it in the United States. Both forecasters agree on direction: total spending is growing at double-digit rates for the first time in decades, and nearly all of the acceleration comes from data center hardware and cloud infrastructure rather than from IT services or communications.

AI explains most of that shift. Gartner's September 2026 forecast puts worldwide AI spending at $2.7 trillion, with AI infrastructure alone at about $1,484 billion, while IDC's tracker of AI servers and storage reaches $497 billion. The buyers are concentrated. In the July to September 2026 quarter, Alphabet spent $51.4 billion on capital expenditures and Meta $34.91 billion; Amazon expects about $220 billion for the full year, and Microsoft's investing cash rose by $20.0 billion year over year. NVIDIA's data center revenue of $89.0 billion in a single quarter is the supplier side of the same spending.

Enterprise budgets are growing more slowly than the hyperscalers' outlays. IT services are forecast to grow 4.4% in 2026 in Gartner's numbers, and much of the hardware increase reflects memory prices that more than doubled in a year. Software remains the largest category of business technology spending, and IDC expects public cloud to pass $1 trillion in 2026. Flexera's buyers say that controlling cloud costs is their top problem and estimate that 29% of cloud spend is wasted.

Official statistics give a slower and more conservative view. The OECD finds that ICT investment ranges from 6.5% of GDP in Switzerland to under 1% in Poland, and that the gap between leaders and laggards has widened since 2019. In the UK, software was the largest capitalized intangible investment at £57.2 billion in 2023. Eurostat reports that 52.74% of EU enterprises paid for cloud services in 2025, so a large share of smaller firms still buy little or no cloud.

How we picked these figures

We chose figures that describe the size and direction of IT spending at three levels: worldwide market forecasts, the capital spending of the largest buyers, and official statistics on ICT investment and cloud adoption. Each figure was read on the publisher's own press release, filing or statistical bulletin. Gartner and IDC figures are forecasts with different market definitions: Gartner includes consumer devices and telecom services, IDC's ICT total is smaller, and both overlap with each other's cloud and AI categories, so their figures should not be added. Company figures come from SEC filings and earnings releases; capital expenditure definitions differ (Meta includes finance lease payments, Amazon reports cash capital expenditures net of incentives). Official statistics lag: the latest UK intangible investment data cover 2023 and OECD comparisons cover 2024. Flexera surveys a few hundred cloud decision makers and its results lean toward large, cloud-heavy organizations. We did not find a free, primary source for IT budgets as a share of company revenue, so this page does not report one. Each quote is copied from the original publisher and fetched again by a script to confirm it still appears there. See the methodology.
