POS System Statistics 2026
This page collects figures on point of sale systems and the payments they handle: how consumers pay in person by cash, card, contactless and mobile wallet, how many merchants and locations run Square, Toast, Shopify, Clover and other POS platforms, how much payment volume those platforms process, and how restaurants and retailers adopt new technology. Payment figures come from central bank diaries and payment studies in the United States, the euro area, Germany, the UK, Australia and Canada. Vendor figures come from company filings and use each company's own definitions. Most data describes 2025 and 2026; the ECB study is from 2024 because it runs every two years.

What the figures show
Cash is now a minority payment method at most counters, but the pace differs by country. The Federal Reserve diary puts cash at around 20% of US in-person payments in 2025, the Bank of Canada at 18% of Canadian point of sale payments and the Reserve Bank of Australia at around 15% of consumer payments. Europe still uses far more cash: the ECB found cash in 52% of euro area point of sale payments in 2024 and the Bundesbank in 45% of German payments in 2025, although cards already lead by value in the euro area.
Contactless has become the default way to pay with a card. Visa reports Tap to Pay at 84% of its face-to-face transactions worldwide and 76% in the United States in September 2026, the Bank of Canada counts 63% of in-person payments as contactless, and UK Finance counts 19.2 billion contactless payments in 2025. The next step is the phone: devices handle around 40% of Australian card payments and 65% of UK adults are registered for a mobile wallet.
POS vendors keep growing faster than retail spending. Toast reached about 189,000 locations, up 21%, with $61.8 billion of quarterly payment volume. Block reports Square payment volume up 14% to $76.4 billion, with food and beverage sellers growing fastest at 20%, while only 16% of its US sellers pay for software. Shopify processed 68% of its $119 billion quarterly GMV through Shopify Payments, and Lightspeed reports about 146,000 customer locations. Fiserv does not publish Clover volume or revenue in its filings.
Restaurants are the most active POS buyers, and their next purchase is AI. The National Restaurant Association finds 38.6% of operators use AI tools, but only 3.2% have rolled it out companywide, and cost is the top obstacle for 48.8%. A Toast survey of small operators found 87% comfortable with AI and 42% trying it through existing vendors, which favors POS platforms that build AI into their product.

How we picked these figures
We took payment mix figures from central bank diaries and payment studies (Federal Reserve, ECB, Bundesbank, Reserve Bank of Australia, Bank of Canada) and from UK Finance, and vendor figures from SEC filings and earnings releases. Each figure links to the page we checked and carries the sentence that contains it. Diaries differ in what they count: some cover all consumer payments, others only point of sale payments, and some measure by number while others by value, so compare figures within a source before comparing across countries. Vendor metrics such as locations, gross payment volume and gross merchandise volume follow each company's own definitions. The Toast restaurant survey comes from a POS vendor and covers small operators only. Figures were checked on 2026-11-06. Each quote is copied from the original publisher and fetched again by a script to confirm it still appears there. See the methodology.
