9 Best POS Systems for Retail of 2026

By the TopToolAdvisor research desk · Updated November 6, 2026 · Next review December 21, 2026 · 9 products scored

Our pickSquare for RetailSmall and mid-size shops that want to start free and add inventory tools per location as they grow.9.2

Our pick in brief

Square for Retail ranks first because a store can start on a free plan and move to Square Plus at $49 per location when it needs stock intake, purchase orders and cost reporting. Shopify POS is the best choice when the store already sells online through Shopify, since inventory and customers are shared. Lightspeed Retail has the deepest purchasing and supplier tools for specialty and multi-store retailers. KORONA POS suits stores that want to keep their own processor without a contract, Clover and Heartland suit shops that want hardware and payments from one provider, eHopper is the low-cost pick, POS Nation fits liquor, grocery and convenience stores, and Erply fits chains that need warehouse and order management.

Quick answer

Square for Retail is the best POS system for retail stores in 2026, with a free plan and inventory intake and purchase orders on Square Plus at $49 per location a month; Shopify POS suits stores that also sell online through Shopify, and Lightspeed Retail suits specialty and multi-store retailers from 89 USD a month. eHopper is the cheapest paid option at $10 a month billed yearly.

This list is for shop owners and retail managers choosing a point of sale system that also runs their inventory and customer records. We compared documented features and published prices for nine systems, looking at how each one handles stock counts, variants, purchase orders, transfers between stores, customer profiles and loyalty, and what the entry plan costs once inventory tools are included. Scores cover features, ease of use and value, and the overall score is a weighted average of the three. Prices come from each vendor's own pricing page on the date shown, and prices we could not confirm in US dollars are marked as pending. Card processing fees are separate from software fees for most vendors, so read both.

    Price

Free plan at $0 a month; Square Plus is $49 per location per month and Premium is $149 per location per month, plus processing fees

Quoted from the Square for Retail pricing page on November 6, 2026: With Square Plus and Square Premium, the monthly fee applies to each location you run. $0/mo. per location $49/mo. per location $149/mo. per location

Square for Retail ranks first because a small store can open on the free plan and pay for inventory depth only once it needs it. Square Free already creates items and SKUs automatically from GTIN barcodes, handles discounts and refunds and includes sales reporting. Square Plus, at $49 per location per month, adds stock intake, vendor and purchase order management and cost of goods sold reporting, which covers what most single-store retailers need. Premium, at $149 per location, adds transfer orders, cross-location returns and fulfillment and 24/7 phone support for multi-store operators. Low-stock alerts, barcode label printing and an on-the-floor counting tool round out the stock side, and the customer side includes text message marketing with 500 texts a month on Plus. The trade-off is that the most useful inventory tools sit behind the paid plans, so a growing shop should budget for Plus from the start. Businesses processing over $250,000 a year can ask Square about custom pricing.

    Strengths

    • +Square Free has no monthly subscription, only processing fees
    • +Plus and Premium each come with a free 30-day trial and can be canceled anytime
    • +Full and cycle inventory counts can be done on the floor and exported

    Drawbacks

    • −Purchase orders and stock intake need Square Plus at $49 per location
    • −Transfer orders and cross-location returns are reserved for Premium
    • −Text message marketing is not available on Square Free

See vendor pricing (USD check pending): basic POS features come with every Shopify plan, and POS Pro is a per-location add-on billed yearly

We could not confirm a US price yet. Check the Shopify POS pricing page.

Shopify POS is the natural pick for retailers whose online store already runs on Shopify, because the register uses the same products, inventory and customers as the website. Stock is tracked by location and syncs in real time, customer profiles show online and in-store order history and lifetime value, and Shop Pay lets the POS match in-store sales to shoppers who already use it. Basic POS features come with every Shopify plan, while POS Pro, an add-on billed yearly per location, adds unlimited staff with roles and permissions, returns and exchanges at any location, pickup in store, ship from store and the in-store tools to receive, send and adjust inventory. Purchase orders, transfers and low stock alerts run from the Shopify admin. There is no built-in loyalty program; Shopify points to more than one hundred apps for loyalty and CRM. Prices were shown in another currency from our location, so we have marked them as pending.

    Strengths

    • +One product catalog and stock count for the store and the website
    • +Customer profiles show lifetime value and orders from every channel
    • +Tap to Pay on a compatible iPhone works without extra hardware

    Drawbacks

    • −Receiving, sending and adjusting inventory at the register require POS Pro
    • −Loyalty programs come from third-party apps rather than built-in tools
    • −USD prices were not shown from our location, so check the US pricing page

Quoted from the Lightspeed Retail pricing page on November 6, 2026: Basic Designed for essential day-to-day needs for independent retailers. 89 USD /mo

Lightspeed Retail, sold as X-Series, has the most complete inventory and purchasing setup here, which is why it ranks high for stores with big or complicated catalogs. It handles products, variants and stock across channels, lets staff create purchase orders from the POS, transfers stock between locations and tracks shrink and discrepancies. The NuORDER connection is the standout: buyers can order from brands, sync purchase orders and pull catalog data for over 5 million products instead of typing them in, and Landed Costs spreads freight and duty into product costs. Customer profiles and sales history follow shoppers between stores and the website, and loyalty is built in for both. Basic is 89 USD a month with one register, Core is 149 USD and Plus is 289 USD, and each extra location or register adds to that. The price and the depth of setup make it more than a small gift shop needs.

    Strengths

    • +The deepest supplier and purchasing tools on this list
    • +Customer profiles and sales history follow shoppers across locations and channels
    • +24/7 chat and phone support listed on the pricing page

    Drawbacks

    • −Basic starts at 89 USD a month, above most rivals' entry plans

    Price

See vendor pricing (USD check pending): retail bundles combine hardware with a monthly software plan

We could not confirm a US price yet. Check the Clover pricing page.

Clover is a good fit for retailers who want the hardware, software and payments from one company. Its retail POS tracks variants with their attributes and combinations, shows stock levels in real time and lets staff scan barcodes to add or update inventory, with reports on item sales and cost. On the customer side it supports profiles and loyalty programs, and a Clover-native online store syncs sales, inventory and customers. Payment options are broad: cards, gift cards, mobile wallets, Klarna installments, Pay by Bank for large purchases and offline payments that process once the connection returns. Retail bundles pair hardware such as the Station Duo, with a 14 inch merchant screen and 8 inch customer display, or the Flex handheld, with Starter or Retail Growth software plans. Because cost depends on the bundle and some offers require credit approval, compare the total over the contract term, not just the monthly fee. USD prices are pending for this list.

    Strengths

    • +Hardware range from compact terminals to the Station Duo and Flex handheld
    • +More than 140,000 retailers use Clover, according to the company
    • +Payments can be taken offline and processed when the connection returns

    Drawbacks

    • −Pricing depends on the hardware bundle you choose
    • −Prices were not available in plain text from our location

    Price

Core $59, Retail $79 and Plus $99 per terminal per month; month-to-month with discounted annual plans

Quoted from the KORONA POS pricing page on November 6, 2026: Core is $59 per terminal per month, Retail is $79, and Plus is $99.

KORONA POS suits retailers who want inventory depth without being tied to a payment processor. Every plan is processing agnostic, month to month and free of setup fees, and the unlimited free trial needs no credit card. Core at $59 per terminal covers checkout, a product database, sales reports and gift cards, but the inventory work starts on Retail at $79, which adds inventory counts, real-time stock tracking, barcode automations, shelf labels, supplier ordering, customer management and custom promotions. Plus at $99 adds multi-location inventory tools, per-store pricing, store comparison and ABC and slow seller reports. KORONA also lists loyalty programs, CRM and email marketing, ID scanning and ecommerce integrations among its retail features, though the pricing table does not say which plan includes loyalty. Per-terminal pricing adds up quickly in stores with many registers, so count lanes before comparing it with per-location plans.

    Strengths

    • +Processing agnostic, so you can keep your current card processor
    • +No forced contracts and no setup fees
    • +Unlimited free trial with no credit card required

    Drawbacks

    • −Inventory tools start on Retail at $79, not on Core
    • −Multi-location tools require the $99 Plus plan

Quoted from the Heartland Genius for Retail pricing page on November 6, 2026: Starting at $42 per month* and 2.6% + $0.10 per transaction

Heartland Genius for Retail fits stores that want a mainstream processor and live support behind their POS. It forecasts inventory needs from historical sales, sends automated stock alerts and tracks trends, and the company says its tools cut physical inventory time. Customer profiles capture shopping behavior, and staff can run custom coupons, promotions and loyalty programs from one place. Associates get custom permissions, and the system includes protections against coupon fraud, which matters for busy counters. Age-regulated shops such as tobacco, liquor and corner stores get age verification support. Pricing starts at $0 a month for Essentials, $42 for Advanced and $129 for Complete, with in-person card rates from 2.6% plus 10 cents, but these are starting points for a single station, and final pricing depends on hardware, configuration and underwriting. Heartland says more than 110,000 retailers use it.

    Strengths

    • +Essentials plan starts at $0 a month for software
    • +24/7 live support team
    • +Countertop, handheld and online payment options

    Drawbacks

    • −Pricing is quote-based beyond the starting figures

Quoted from the eHopper pricing page on November 6, 2026: 10.00 month Billed at $120.00 /1yr. Limited to 1 license.

eHopper is the budget option for shops that mainly need a reliable register with stock and customer records. Essential Plus costs $10 a month billed at $120 a year, or $14.99 month to month, and includes inventory management, customer management, split payments and basic reporting, but it stops at 1,000 products and 1,000 transactions a month. Most retailers will be better served by Freedom, which removes those limits and adds an inventory matrix for variants, store transfers, PO receiving, a barcode manager, low stock alerts, loyalty and QuickBooks integration, from $20.99 a month billed yearly. The software runs on eHopper all-in-one devices, Android tablets and Windows PCs and works with eHopper processing or other providers. The trade-off is lighter reporting and support than the larger platforms, with phone support only on the top OmniChannel plan.

    Strengths

    • +Runs on Android tablets and Windows PCs as well as eHopper hardware
    • +30-day money back guarantee

POS Nation sells retail POS systems configured by industry, with separate products for liquor stores, grocery, smoke shops, convenience stores and cell phone retailers. Starter, from $49 a month billed annually, covers reporting, a real-time dashboard, a mobile back office, purchase orders, discounts, mobile label printing, age verification and a dual pricing module for passing card fees to customers. Growth adds employee time tracking, A to D auto-ranking of products, mix and match discounts, customer loyalty, intelligent ordering and SMS reports. Premium adds multi-site transfers, SMS marketing and Pointy integration, which shows in-store inventory in Google search results. The monthly fee includes 24/7 support and unlimited training, and there are no setup fees. Growth and Premium prices are shown only after you fill in a form, and none of the plans lists ecommerce, so stores that sell online will need a separate tool.

Its app store includes POS, inventory, warehouse management, stocktakes, order management, reporting, ecommerce, customer loyalty and self checkout, so a chain can run stock from the warehouse shelf to the shop floor in one account. What to check before you buy

Check which plan includes inventory

Many retail POS systems keep their stock tools off the entry plan. Square adds stock intake and purchase orders on Plus, KORONA starts inventory on its $79 Retail plan, Shopify puts in-store receiving on POS Pro, and eHopper adds variants and transfers on Freedom. Price the plan that has the inventory features you need, not the cheapest one.

Count locations and registers

Vendors charge in different units. Square and Shopify POS Pro charge per location, KORONA charges per terminal, eHopper per license, and Lightspeed includes one register and charges for extra registers and locations. A store with four checkout lanes can pay very different totals on plans that look similar.

Decide how much customer management you need

Customer profiles with purchase history are common, but loyalty programs vary. Lightspeed, Clover, Heartland and Erply include loyalty tools, POS Nation adds loyalty on Growth, eHopper on Freedom, and Shopify relies on third-party apps. If repeat visits drive your sales, confirm loyalty is in the plan you are pricing.

Look at processing and contract terms

Square, Shopify, Clover and Heartland tie the POS to their own payments, while KORONA and eHopper let you use another processor. KORONA is month to month, and some Clover offers require credit approval and minimum processing. Add expected card fees to the software price to compare real monthly cost.

Square for Retail is our top pick because it has a free plan and adds stock intake, purchase orders and cost reporting on Square Plus at $49 per location a month. Shopify POS is the runner-up for stores that also sell online, and Lightspeed Retail is best for specialty and multi-store retailers.

Which retail POS works with any card processor?
KORONA POS is processing agnostic on every plan, so you can keep your current processor, and eHopper works with eHopper processing or other providers. Square, Shopify, Clover and Heartland are tied to their own payment services.
Which POS is best for a store with several locations?

Erply targets chains and franchises that also run warehouses.
