By the TopToolAdvisor research desk · Updated November 6, 2026 · Next review December 21, 2026 · 10 products scored
Our pick in brief
Square ranks first because its free plan already covers an item library with inventory, invoicing, booking and a basic online store, and the move to Square Plus at $49 per location adds loyalty, staff scheduling and lower card rates without a contract. SumUp is the simplest low-cost start for a single seller, with no monthly fee on its free tier and 2.6% + 10¢ per in-person card payment. Shopify POS fits stores that already sell online with Shopify, Clover suits owners who want countertop hardware bundled into a monthly payment, and Loyverse gives cafes and small shops a free POS with kitchen and customer displays. Helcim and PayPal Point of Sale charge no monthly fee, Toast is built for restaurants, Lightspeed suits retailers with large catalogs, and eHopper is the cheapest paid software plan here.

Square Free at $0 a month; Square Plus at $49 and Square Premium at $149 per location per month; in-person cards cost 2.6% + 15¢ on the free plan
Quoted from the Square pricing page on November 6, 2026:
$0/mo. per location $49/mo. per location $149/mo. per location
Square is the easiest recommendation for a small business that sells in person and wants to start without a monthly bill. Square Free includes the POS app, an item library that tracks inventory, invoices and estimates, appointment booking with staff calendars and a basic website or online store, so a new shop or service business can run on it for some time. In-person card payments cost 2.6% + 15¢ on that plan. Square Plus, at $49 per location per month, adds the industry features for restaurants, retail and appointments, a loyalty program, email campaigns, 500 included texts and staff scheduling, and lowers the in-person rate to 2.5% + 15¢. Square Premium at $149 adds 24/7 phone support and advanced reporting. The main costs to watch are the per-location fee and extras such as kitchen display and kiosk software, which are billed per device on top of the plan.
Strengths
- +The free plan covers far more than card taking, including invoicing and booking
- +No contract, and you can switch or cancel plans at any time
- +One account covers food, retail and appointment features on Square Plus
Drawbacks
- −Square Free has the highest in-person rate of its plans at 2.6% + 15¢
- −Paid plans are charged per location, which adds up for multi-site owners
- −Kitchen display and kiosk software cost extra per device

Free tier at $0 a month plus a one-time hardware cost; POS Plus at $49 a month; SumUp POS from $99 a month; 2.6% + 10¢ per in-person card payment
Quoted from the SumUp pricing page on November 6, 2026:
With POS Plus you'll pay a $49/month subscription fee and our standard fee structure: 2.6% + 10¢ for card-present transactions
SumUp is built for sellers who want to start taking cards for the price of a reader. The free tier has no monthly cost: you pay once for the hardware and then 2.6% + 10¢ per in-person card payment, and you get the SumUp Business app with payment links, invoicing, appointment bookings, reporting and a free business account with a Visa card. That covers a craft stall, food truck or mobile service well. POS Plus at $49 a month adds the tools a small counter or cafe needs, such as multi-device sync, several ticket printers, floor plan setup and cash drawer tracking. SumUp POS, from $99 a month, adds SMS messaging and multi-store management. Card rates do not fall on the paid plans, so the upgrade only makes sense for the extra features. Loyalty through SumUp Connect is priced separately and starts at $269 a month, which is high for a small shop.
Strengths
- +No monthly fee on the free tier, only a one-time hardware cost
- +The same 2.6% + 10¢ in-person rate on every plan
- +Business account and card included at no charge
Drawbacks
- −The free tier lacks multi-device sync and front-of-house tools
- −The jump from POS Plus at $49 to SumUp POS at $99 is steep

Basic retail kit with a compact terminal at $16 a month for 36 months or $349 upfront; Standard and Advanced kits add a software fee from $84.95 a month
Quoted from the Clover pricing page on November 6, 2026:
$16/mofor 36 months or $349
Clover sells its POS as a bundle of hardware and software, which suits owners who want a proper counter terminal without a large upfront payment. The cheapest retail kit, Basic, pairs a compact terminal with a built-in printer and the Starter Retail plan for $16 a month over 36 months or $349 upfront. It covers card, wallet, PayPal and Venmo payments, real-time sales tracking, tax reports, a customer database and staff logins, with in-person cards at 2.6% + 10¢. Item management, itemized returns, detailed reports and a branded online store start with the Standard kit, which adds a 14 inch Station Duo with a customer screen and a cash drawer, and the Advanced kit adds the Flex handheld. Those kits carry a much higher monthly cost, so the price gap between Basic and Standard is the main thing to weigh. Prices shown apply when buying directly from Clover's own site.
Strengths
- +Hardware can be paid monthly instead of upfront
- +Accepts cards, mobile wallets, PayPal, Venmo and checks
- +In-person rate falls to 2.3% + 10¢ on Standard and Advanced
Drawbacks
- −Basic kit leaves out inventory management and detailed reports
- −Standard and Advanced kits cost $180 to $240 a month for 36 months plus software
- −Online prices apply only when buying on Clover's own site

See vendor pricing (USD check pending): POS Lite comes with every Shopify plan, and POS Pro is an add-on per location
We could not confirm a US price yet. Check the Shopify POS pricing page.
Shopify POS makes the most sense for a small business whose online store already runs on Shopify, or will soon. The POS reads the same product catalog, stock levels and customer profiles as the website, so a sale at the counter updates the online store and returns can be handled from either side. Every Shopify plan includes the basic POS features: draft orders, multichannel gift cards, reporting and access to Shopify's own counter and handheld hardware. Retail teams that need unlimited staff accounts, permission controls, inventory counts, purchase orders and clienteling tools must add POS Pro for each location. In-person card rates step down as you move to higher Shopify plans, and Shopify charges an extra fee if you use a third-party payment provider. Pricing was shown only in local currency from our location, so confirm the US price of your Shopify plan and POS Pro before you sign up.
Strengths
- +The tightest link between online and in-store selling on this list
- +In-person card rates fall on higher Shopify plans
- +Wide choice of counter and handheld hardware
Drawbacks
- −You pay for a Shopify plan even if you mostly sell in person

No monthly, software or statement fees; interchange-plus card pricing with volume discounts; card reader $199 and Smart Terminal $349
Quoted from the Helcim pricing page on November 6, 2026:
No account monthly fees No minimums, software fees, or statement fees.
Helcim is a payment processor first, and its main appeal for small businesses is cost. There are no monthly fees, software fees, minimums, statement fees or contracts, and card payments are billed at interchange plus a published margin with volume discounts, so a business with steady card sales often pays less than on a flat rate. The toolset includes a point of sale, a virtual terminal, invoicing, payment links, an online checkout, an inventory catalog and accounting integrations at no monthly cost, while recurring billing adds 0.4% per transaction. Hardware is bought outright: the card reader works with iOS, Android, macOS and Windows for $199, and the Smart Terminal with a built-in printer and 4G costs $349 or $32 a month for a year. The trade-off is depth. Helcim has fewer restaurant, staff and loyalty features than Square or Loyverse, and interchange-based bills vary month to month with the mix of cards your customers use.
Strengths
- +No monthly fees, contracts or cancellation fees
- +Interchange-plus rates can cost less than flat rates at higher volumes
- +Next-business-morning deposits at no charge
Drawbacks
- −Card costs vary by card type, which makes bills harder to predict
- −Fewer staff, table and loyalty tools than dedicated POS systems
- −Hardware is bought outright, at $199 for the reader
- Monthly fee

- Card reader

See vendor pricing (USD check pending): free POS with optional paid add-ons per store or per employee
We could not confirm a US price yet. Check the Loyverse pricing page.
Loyverse gives small food and retail businesses a working POS at no software cost. The free tier runs on a phone, tablet or supported POS device and includes sales analytics for the last 31 days, essential inventory with low-stock alerts, a loyalty program, a customer-facing display, a kitchen display and management of several stores from one account. That covers what many cafes, bars and corner shops need. Loyverse is not a payment processor itself; it connects to providers such as SumUp, Zettle, Shift4 and Tyro, so your card rate depends on which one you pick. Paid add-ons fill the gaps: unlimited sales history, employee management with permissions and hours, and advanced inventory with purchase orders and stock transfers. Each is billed per store or per employee and starts with a 14-day trial. Add-on prices were shown in euros from our location, so check the US price before you plan around them.
Strengths
- +Kitchen display and loyalty are free, which is rare at this price
- +Works with several payment providers, including SumUp and Zettle
- +Each paid add-on has a 14-day free trial
Drawbacks
- −Free sales reports cover only the last 31 days
- −Staff permissions and time tracking need a paid add-on per employee

No monthly fee; 2.29% + 9¢ per card-present payment and 3.49% + 9¢ for manually entered cards
Quoted from the PayPal Point of Sale pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Card Present Transactions 2.29% + 0.09 USD
PayPal Point of Sale, the product formerly sold as PayPal Zettle, suits small sellers who already take PayPal online and want to add card payments at a stall, studio or small shop. The POS app is free on iOS and Android, and you can start with the Card Reader paired to a phone or move to the Terminal, which has the app built in. The software covers product setup, discounts, inventory with low-stock notifications and sales reports that highlight bestsellers, and it connects to accounting and ecommerce tools. There is no monthly fee, and card-present payments cost 2.29% + 9¢, the lowest published flat rate among the systems here. Manually keyed cards cost 3.49% + 9¢. The feature set is lighter than Square's, with no built-in table management or staff scheduling, and the account is subject to PayPal's eligibility and approval process.
Strengths
- +Lowest published flat in-person rate on this list at 2.29% + 9¢
- +No monthly fee or long-term commitment
- +Card sales land in the same PayPal account as online sales

Starter Kit from $0 a month with a hardware kit and no upfront cost; Point of Sale plan from $69 a month; POS and payroll bundle from $69 a month plus $9 per employee
Quoted from the Toast pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Point Of Sale Starting at $69 /month
Toast is the specialist pick for small food and drink businesses. Its POS includes table and order management, digital menus, mobile payments, a guest CRM with feedback, and an offline mode that keeps taking orders, printing tickets and accepting cards when the connection drops. The Starter Kit is aimed at single-location restaurants with one or two terminals and comes with a hardware kit and no upfront cost, starting at $0 a month. The Point of Sale plan starts at $69 a month, lets you choose your own hardware and uses flat-rate processing, and new restaurants can bundle POS with Toast Payroll from $69 a month plus $9 per employee. Online ordering, delivery, websites, loyalty and inventory sit in add-on suites, so the bill grows as you add them. Toast offers a retail version too, but most of its depth is in restaurant work, which is why general shops rank it lower here.
Strengths
- +The deepest restaurant feature set on this list
- +Starter Kit gets a small venue running with no upfront hardware cost
- +Offline mode protects sales when the internet drops
Drawbacks
- −Built for food service, so general retailers get less from it
- −Starter Kit is limited to one location and two terminals

Basic from $89 a month, Core from $149 and Plus from $289, each with one register; annual billing saves up to 18%
Quoted from the Lightspeed Retail pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Basic Designed for essential day-to-day needs for independent retailers. 89 USD /mo
Lightspeed Retail is the most capable retail system on this list and the most expensive to start. Plans run from Basic at $89 a month to Core at $149 and Plus at $289, each with one register included, and annual billing saves up to 18%. The platform covers inventory management and purchase orders, in-store and online loyalty, detailed sales, staff and inventory reports, a built-in online store and integrations with accounting and marketing tools, and the plan comparison also lists a mobile scanner app, landed costs, forecasting and order recommendations, API access and custom user roles. Check the comparison table for which tier includes each tool. Support is available around the clock by chat and phone. For a bike shop, apparel store or home goods retailer with thousands of variants, those tools can save hours of stock work each week. For a small shop with a short product list, the monthly cost is hard to justify next to Square or Shopify POS.
Strengths
- +The strongest inventory and purchasing tools on this list
- +24/7 chat and phone support
- +Loyalty and an online store come with the platform
Drawbacks
- −The highest entry price here at $89 a month
- −Each plan includes only one register
- −More setup work than simpler POS apps

- Registers included

Essential Plus at $10 a month billed $120 a year, or $14.99 billed monthly; Freedom from $20.99 a month billed yearly
Quoted from the eHopper pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Essential Plus Software plan for basic operations and lower transaction volume SAVE 30%! 10.00 month Billed at $120.00 /1yr.
eHopper is a budget POS for small shops and quick service venues that want paid software without a large bill. Essential Plus costs $10 a month billed at $120 a year, or $14.99 month to month, and covers inventory, tips, customers, modifiers, tax settings, split payments and basic reports. It is capped at 1,000 products, 1,000 transactions a month and a single license, so it fits a small, quiet store. The Freedom plan, from $20.99 a month billed yearly, removes those caps and adds loyalty, surcharges and cash discounts, clock in and out, barcode tools, low-stock alerts, a self-service kiosk and QuickBooks integration, plus email support. A Restaurant plan adds table management and a kitchen display. eHopper runs on its own terminals, Android tablets and Windows PCs and can work with eHopper or outside payment processing. The interface and ecosystem are smaller than Square's, which is why it ranks last despite its low price.
Strengths
- +Cheapest paid POS software on this list at $10 a month billed yearly
- +Can use an outside payment processor
- +30-day money back guarantee
Drawbacks
- −Essential Plus is capped at 1,000 products and 1,000 transactions a month

- −Email support starts on the Freedom plan

What to check before you buy
Add up software fees and card fees together
A $0 plan is not free if every card payment costs more. Square Free charges 2.6% + 15¢ per in-person card payment and Square Plus drops that to 2.5% + 15¢, SumUp charges 2.6% + 10¢ on every plan, and PayPal Point of Sale charges 2.29% + 9¢. Multiply the rate by your monthly card sales and add the subscription to compare real costs.
Price the hardware before you commit
Several systems run on a phone or tablet, but most counters need a reader, printer or terminal. Helcim lists its card reader at $199 and its Smart Terminal at $349, Clover bundles hardware into a monthly payment over 36 months, and Toast offers a Starter Kit with no upfront hardware cost. Check what happens to bundled hardware if you cancel early.
Match the system to how you sell
Restaurants need table, kitchen and menu tools, which Toast, Square and Loyverse include. Retailers need variants, purchase orders and stock counts, where Lightspeed and Shopify POS Pro go further. Stores that also sell online should favor a POS that shares one product catalog with the website, such as Shopify POS or Square.
Check what the free tier leaves out
Free tiers usually limit reporting history, staff tools or support. Loyverse keeps sales reports for 31 days unless you pay for unlimited history, Square reserves loyalty and shift scheduling for paid plans, and SumUp moves multi-device sync to POS Plus. List the two or three features you cannot live without and confirm the plan that includes them.
Common questions
- What is the cheapest POS system for a small business?
- Square Free, SumUp, Loyverse, Helcim and PayPal Point of Sale all charge $0 a month for the software, so the real cost is card fees and hardware. Among paid plans, eHopper Essential Plus is the cheapest at $10 a month billed yearly.
- Which POS has the lowest in-person card fees?
- Among flat rates, PayPal Point of Sale publishes 2.29% + 9¢ for card-present payments, Clover Standard and Advanced charge 2.3% + 10¢, and Square ranges from 2.6% + 15¢ on Square Free to 2.4% + 15¢ on Premium. Helcim uses interchange-plus pricing, which often costs less for businesses with steady volume.
- Can I run a POS from my phone?
- Yes. Square, SumUp, PayPal Point of Sale and Loyverse all run on a phone or tablet, and PayPal also supports Tap to Pay on a phone with no extra hardware. A card reader or terminal is still useful for chip cards and busy counters.
- Which POS is best for a small restaurant?
- Toast has the deepest restaurant tools, including offline mode, table management and digital menus, with a Starter Kit from $0 a month. Square Plus and Loyverse also include restaurant features and kitchen displays at a lower cost.
- Do I need a contract to use these POS systems?
- Square, Helcim and PayPal Point of Sale state that there are no long-term contracts. Clover hardware can be paid over 36 months, so check what you owe if you cancel early.
